I like bits of this.

My figurative pieces are made using moulds from life-casts. I use earthenware and made impressions from catkins and snowdrops. I fire the clay to 1120C and apply copper oxide with clear glaze to emphasize the surface markings.

I never think of my torsos in that way and so I had assumed nobody else did, but you have a good point, I shall try to change them. Thank you.

Thought this was paper mache when I first saw it, which seems like a fun project now that I think of it.

I have done some work in paper mache in the past but I find clay much easier :)

It must take less time, at least initially. I've only ever done paper mache in school, but I remember it taking forever 9_9

Oh the clay bit only takes a few hours. It is the initial casting of a gullible person and then trying to make decent moulds, that takes ages. My son makes prosthetics and despairs at my plaster moulds, he uses silicone and fibreglass, which are much stronger :)

Ahaha, that's pretty cool. Do you guys ever collaborate? Which came first, your moulds or his prosthetics?

I wish I could say my stuff but realistically!
He would die if he knew I was talking about him, but proud mummy time. He is only 20 and works away from home during the week making lots of fun stuff including monsters for Dr Who ... do you know the show?
When he has time I do want to try and do some stuff together cos he is very good at sculpting too ... which I am not!

I'm familiar with the show, and the age—I'm 20 as well. I like that he combined his skill in sculpting with prosthetics; what a nice way to do what he loves.

It is really hard being your age. He has been very lucky. What are you doing/hope to do?

Interesting piece, I've always been fascinated by those who dabble in clay. So tell me, is it molded then pored?

I cheat. I cannot sculpt, so I do use molds. I then take a piece of clay and roll it out like pastry, impress whatever I have collected into the surface and then carefully place this int the mold. For smaller items people do use liquid clay (I think!)

I wouldn't call it cheating since I only manipulate photos and most of the time these photos belong to someone else. However, when you take something, anything and create something new I believe its art. If it's beautiful and brings joy, awe, or contentment its a good thing! Thanks for the explanation though and please feel free to browse my gallery anytime.
